A garden of one's own
A garden of one's own is a multimedia interactive proposal, a website that compiles the medicinal and botanical knowledge of Cañar women carers from South of the Ecuadorian Andes Cordillera. The knowledge relates to the use of medicinal plants in healthcare.
The virtual platform allows visitors to discover the medicinal garden created by one of the authors' grandmother, a woman who, like many others, has devoted her life to her family's care. Each object and each plant tell a story about their owner, and reveal her medicinal knowledge in caring for the human body in sickness and in health. A recipe book featuring the findings of several local women explains how to appropriate for oneself the many uses of medicinal plants.
Texts, photographs, audios, videos and other media bring the platform users closer to the knowledge of Cañar women carers, to their work and life experiences, while exploring the results of an ethnographic study.
A garden of one's own was initiated in 2014. The website construction pre-requisites - research, compilation, data analysis - were financed by the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO) in Ecuador, and by Belgium's Development Commission (CUD). It is partly supported by a MAV grant, following a professional collaboration agreement between the authors and the Audiovisual Syndicate, a multimedia research collective whose achievements include Ecuador's Digital Film Library. www.cinematecaecuador.com -.
