From childhood to old age, and vice versa, is the result of the projects carried out by Tana Garrido and Alina Aguila, in the frame of the Artistic Practices Residency Programme 2019 during their stay at Azkuna Zentroa developed in collaboration with Estudio Carlos Garaicoa ‘Artista x Artista’ programme in La Habana.

Alina Aguila focuses her practice on the world of toys and their psychological qualities, as game objects and companions of an individual in her first experiments with reality. This phenomenon that at some point coincides with the fetish has a lot to do with the art world and its objects. Works of art are in some way the complex toys of a culture.

Toys are made for children with a whole psychological, scientific, didactic investigation. However, adults get caught up in that thought, making it impossible for them to part with these practices. The impossibility of psychological and playful detachment is evident.

As the artist explains, “I am interested in creating an extension, a limb that displaces the simple connotation of things to a magical idealization. With the industrialization of toys, they have reached a refinement in the finishing and use of their materials, reproducing without limits. In my case there is a return to personalization and imagined recreations. I intend to rescue a material and intimate manipulation; I like to think of it as resuscitation, replay of simple and transcendental ideas”.

In dialogue with Alina Aguila, artist Tana Garrido build an audiovisual observatory installation of the Cuban contemporary domestic space. Garrido has worked with the testimony of Cuban women of Basque origin to reflect on gender, territory and memory. In this piece the daily space is taken as certainty, in front of the abstract idea of territory. The house preserves the family story -that time erodes- and only when those walls are transcended the collective memory begins to inhabit.

According to Garrido, “the process has had different stages: the first, the stage of research, here in the Basque Country; the second, in Havana, making contact with the environment and establishing relationships with all these women; and the third, the stage of materialization and recording in video and audio of all the above. Finally, all these materials come together to create a formal antithesis that allows us to approximate both the construction of a series of specific identities, as well as a common one: the one of women and their history”.

Tana Garrido (1989) resides and produces in the Basque Country. Her work comes under the umbrella of documentary, contemporary art, visual essay and cultural revitalisation. Her works have been exhibited in different contemporary arts centres, such as Sant Andreu Contemporani (Barcelona) and Arts Santa Mònica (Barcelona), as well as in film festivals, such as Márgenes (Madrid) or Atlantidoc (Uruguay). She is the programmer and co-founder of the Festival of Shorts by Women ‘Bendita Tú’ and a member of the SC Collective, focused on experimentation in the audiovisual medium and working with shared material. She has been a programmer of ‘Iberodocs’, the Edinburgh Festival of IberoAmerican Documentary Cinema, and she works on his first feature film screenplay.
